The Pine Lawn Farm & Heart of Dixie Story

Sam ( Buddy ) Darwin, the owner and president of  Pine Lawn Farm’s and  Heart of Dixie Popcorn & Supply was raised on the Pine Lawn farm in a farm family of peddlers.  His daddy peddled milk, butter, eggs, chickens, turkeys, pork, and beef, and vegetables of all kinds that was grown, produced, and harvested right on the farm.  Many of  Sam’s younger days were spent following his daddy and helping with the farm deliveries.
Sam writes, “In addition to all the crops mentioned above, we also grew cotton, wheat, and field corn.  When I  was a child, we picked all
of these crops by hand with the exception of wheat, which was hired out and harvested with a threshing machine.  It was hard work to pick the crops by hand in those
days, I remember the aches and pains in my back that was connected with picking cotton by hand and picking the “down rows” of corn by hand.  The “down rows” were the two rows of corn that the mule drawn wagon knocked down when pulling through the corn field while the pickers pulled the ears of corn off the stalks and pitched the ears in the wagon.”
“Daddy would put me pulling the ears of corn from off of the “down rows”  behind the wagon because at the time, I was the closest to the ground and didn’t have so far to reach, so to speak, since I was the youngest and the shortest in the family.  Thank goodness for modern technology, that has eliminated picking the “down rows” , because at 6 feet 3 inches tall, it would really hurt my back these days compared to when I was much younger.”
"I gained a valuable work ethic and a knowledge of sales and marketing from growing up on the farm.  We always had something to eat for sale.  It is the same today on Pine Lawn Farm, which has been in my family since 1817, we always have something to eat for sale.”   "So in 1985 Pine Lawn Farm’s was looking for a crop that we could market directly to the consumer. We chose popcorn to supply this “nitch” market."  Today at Heart of Dixie Popcorn and Supply we continue to plant, grow, and harvest a variety of  farm crops, including growing and selling our grade A high expansion popcorn our private label of Heart of Dixie

Web Site - Heart of Dixie Brand Popcorn - A Family Tradition
Dateline:  March 1, 2002

Customers throughout the United States, Central and South America, Asia, and Europe enjoy the unique flavor and color of our popcorn.  Our retail packaging for many years was called Highvalley's Pride - so named for the Cherokee Indian medicine man of North Alabama and days gone by.
The Cherokee prized popcorn both as a food and the belief that the kernels held both health and great spiritual value.
Today, Frances Darwin ( Sam's wife ) and her family raise this popcorn on the same rich red soils of North Alabama and Madison County that her Cherokee ancestor Highvalley and his people raised it many years ago.  We invite you to join us at Heart of Dixie Popcorn & Supply and taste a tradition that has lasted for generations, the magic of popcorn.
